When someone is in an emotionally charged (known as a ‘hot’) state, like being hungry or being angry, they make different decisions and they act differently than they would if they were in a calm or emotionally neutral (known as a ‘cold’) state.

Examples:

  • A woman plans to eat a healthy dinner, but she is hungry when she goes to the market. So she buys junk food she can eat immediately instead of healthy foods that have to be prepared and cooked for dinner.

  • A person strongly believes in practicing safe sex and is committed to using a condom. Yet, in the heat of the moment, they don’t use a condom.
