Helping create or build something changes how a person values the item above just owning it. They tend to think it is worth more and are less likely to give it up. Therefore encouraging someone to create something on their own builds an inflated sense of value for that item and may make it more likely they start or continue it.
To encourage someone to do or continue something, let them create or co-create it.
Create a feeling of creation and ownership over a process, perhaps by giving pieces of a process and having an individual put them together in their own way before starting the process.
